Day 5

Horray! We moved onto our ship today! After a warm noisy night with no AC and drunk boys yelling in the street about 5am, oh and the street cleaner churning by, we awake to a new adventure.  Frank & I headed to the German National Museum while Pam & Jane toured Hitler's Parade grounds.

I thoroughly enjoyed the museum's exhibits of musical instruments, 18th century decorative arts, and early weaponry. We would've liked to have seen other exhibits such as the scientific instruments, but dammit, we just couldn't find them! The building layout was incomprehensible to us and my limited German was worse than their English. Just knowing "over there" and left, right, and "I don't understand" just didn't cut it.

Some of the instruments we saw,  I'm sure the flute is from "The Magic Flute" eh?

Paige, this says it is a reed making machine in the oboe section!  Does this look familiar?

We enjoyed what we did see, then headed over to the Toy Museum. Lots of fun toys featuring local manufactures, but we did get a kick out of the model train exhibit modeled after Omaha, Neb.
Enough of the sausages, I know I can't believe I said that, but pizza was in order for a nice break.  Oh, and the gingerbread and chocolate. Funny, we never seem to need a break from those.  We headed to our ship, the Odin, the newest on Viking Cruise Lines.  We currently sit in a canal which Nuremburg dredged to get the ships in closer to town.  We took a tour of the boat, checked into our charming cabin with a nice little deck & 2 chairs, and did a wine tasting with our wine steward.  We sat with 2 English couples and had quite a discussion on politics and the Queen.  The fact that one couple claimed to be so very tired from traveling all the way from England (to Germany) fell on unsympathetic ears. What is the time difference we ask? Oh, one hour. Really.

The first day we had a wine tasting to try out both the complimentary beer and wine and the options for purchase.  Of course we tried them all!

Manditory safety instruction!

It's nice to move into a room where we know        we'll be for seven nights.  Of course, our tiny bathroom is full of newly washed laundry - let the hand washing begin! Tomorrow we load up the tour buses for the various Nuremburg highlights like the courtroom for the Nuremburg trials, the a few other sights, then we are " at river" ok, not the proper term, but we set sail by early afternoon.  Auf weiderzane!

  1. The museum of musical instruments sounds very interesting. Also the decorative arts.
Oh my, the jet lag from England to Germany must be exhausting!
